With my passion for keeping fish well established my sister recently asked my advice when she decided she would like to buy a small fish tank for living room. With two small children on the go all day long it needed to be small enough to be able to put up on a shelf out of harms reach yet large enough to keep a reasonable number of tropical fish in.
As a beginner fish keeper and a busy mom she also needed a tank that would take minimal time and effort to look after while providing an attractive focal point for the room and creating interest for the children.
These days there are literally hundreds of fish tanks around but my mind immediately went to Reef One’s range of Biorb aquariums which seemed to fit the bill perfectly. The Biorb range aren’t just aquariums but come with all the kit you will need. As their leaflets state – all you need to do is to add water and fish and our findings seem to support that whilst this is potentially a little simplistic these really are great little kits.
Biorb offer a range of different aquariums in their range from the SpyOrb to the biUbe though the model that caught my sisters attention was the Biorb Life range with it’s ultra-smart, modern and easy-to-clean design based on straight lines with no nasty corners to try and get into during routine tank maintenance.
Having helped her make a decision that she is very happy with I thought it might be useful to other interested fish keepers to create a Reef One Biorb Life review here in the hope that our research will also help you to make a decision as to whether the Biorb Life aquarium is right for you.
Modern Design
One look at the Biorb Life aquarium is all it takes to show that this is without a doubt the most stylish and attractive aquarium currently available that will add a modern touch of class to any room. This is more than just a container to put fish into – it is a beautiful object in it’s own right.
Made From Strong Acrylic
Reef One claim that the acrylic they make the Biorb Life aquarium from is ten times stronger and clearer than glass and while I have no way of testing this I can tell you that the sides provide an amazing view of the fish within the tank. The acrylic is also far lighter than glass tanks of a similar size making it easier to move around and easier to place onto furniture without risking damage.
Range Of Colors
The Biorb Life range comes in three different color forms known as Ice White, Chilli Red and Piano Black to ensure that whatever model you pick will fit into the decor of your room.
Range Of Sizes
The Biorb Life aquarium comes in three different sizes to enable you to choose a model to suit your home. Generally in my opinion the larger aquariums are more impressive and the larger body of water should make keeping your fish healthier in them too.
The models are:
S30 – This is the smallest Biorbe Life aquarium in the range and holds 30 litres (8 gallons) of water. It measures in at 42cm (16 1/2″) high by 40cm (15 3/4″) wide by 23.5cm (9 1/4″) deep.
P45 – This is the medium-sized Biorb Life model and holds 45 litres (12 gallons) of water. It measures in at 56cm (22″) high by 37.5cm (14 3/4″) wide by 25.5cm (10″) deep.
P60 – Thus us the largest and most impressive of the Biorb Life aquariums and holds 60 litres (16 gallons) of water. It measures in at 62cm (24 1/2″) high by 42cm (16 1/2″) wide by 28cm (11″) deep.
Built In Filtration
The filtration unit is built directly into the Biorb Life aquarium and is hidden in the base of the aquarium where is does not distract from the visual impact of the tank. The filter includes all three major filtration elements of chemical, physical and biological filtration. The filter is easily accessed from above and filter kits are available allowing you to change the media when necessary. So far the filter is working very well and the fish seem very happy. Complete guidance on using and maintaining the filter is included in the box.
Intelligent Light
The Biorb Life aquariums come with lighting built in as well as filtration and Reef One have designed what they call an “intelligent light” which cycles through a 24 hour period. This means the light is brightest at “midday” and slowly dims in the evening before turning on a “moonlight phase” during the night.
This is not only a fun and neat feature allowing you to see your fish well but the way it artificially mimics the day/night patterns of the sun also helps to create a more natural home for your fish and should help to keep them relaxed and healthy.
The bulbs in the Intelligent Light are energy-efficient LEDS and should last around 50,000 hours though spares are easily available from Reef One should you need them.
Complete Kit
The Biorb Life kit comes, as mentioned, with everything except water and fish. The box includes the tank, lighting, filtration, rocks for the bottom of the tank, water treatment solution and everything else you could need meaning that you save the time and hassle of trying to find all these different elements seperately hoping that they will work together properly.
Range Of Accessories Available
The Biorb aquarium range also has a wide range of accessories that are readily available and designed to fit any aquarium in the range including the Biorb Life. I particularly liked the No Algae accessory designed to remove any unwanted algae from a tank should it have been unfortunate enough to receive full sunlight through your window.
There is also Tropical Heater Pack which we purchased in addition to the Biorb Life aquarium to allow my sister to keep tropical community fish in her tank. A Marine Conversion Kit is available for the more adventurous who may want to keep marine fish such as clownfish in a Biorb Life.
The only real downside I can see of the Biorb aquariums is that even the largest model isn’t tremendously big and so the serious aquarium enthusiast may get frustrated and want to upgrade to a larger tank. However for anyone who wants an attractive tank that is incredibly easy to set up straight out of the box and simple to look after then the Reef One Biorb Life aquarium fits the bill perfectly in my opinion.
